2013 was a challenging year, filled with excitement and anticipation.  In July we opened a new storage facility which was a huge challenge and a new experience. I am very thankful to the staff at L&R who stood up to the test. We worked tirelessly to bring in new clients and it was a team effort from start to finish.

I think it is important to look back, reflect and learn from the many lessons that each year provides. I decided last year that it was time for us to step out of our comfort zone and market our services, a task in which I had no previous experience. Picking up the phone, going to network meetings and organising meetings was a terrifying prospect. The thought of becoming a ‘salesman’ petrified me, like the very spectacle of an English batsman facing Mitchell Johnson. I wasn’t sure how to go about it.Storage

It was a heart to heart with Richard, my Operations Manager where he gave me a kick up the backside and instilled a little self confidence. He pointed out I have been working in the industry since I was a young boy, I have collected paperwork from all over the country and I have collected paperwork from office blocks, sheds, garages, lofts and yes I once even shredded paperwork collected from a sewer. I have seen the challenges people face first hand. Richard pointed out that I didn’t have to be a salesman, but a knowledgeable expert that could help businesses facing paperwork problems. It transformed the way I thought about our services and the way I went about promoting them.

We looked at our core services and the reasons why we had such a loyal client base. We took these values and applied them to our marketing strategy. This approach resulted in L&R taking on more new clients in 2013 than any previous year, since our inception.

You don’t have to be a hot shot salesman to sell your services or products, people appreciate honesty, integrity and reliability. If you are passionate about helping and guiding potential clients, then your products or services will sell themselves.

From a personal point of view, I went from managing the operations at L&R to the Business Development Manager. It was a massive challenge for me, going from behind a comfortable desk to negotiating and signing contracts with one of the world’s largest accountants and other local businesses. I also decided to start a blog about my business musings which now reaches over 6000 people; this is something I am immensely proud of.

In 2014 I have set the team and myself some tough goals, if achieved I know we will go from strength to strength.  I hope 2014 is a successful year for you and you attain the goals you have set for yourself. I would like to thank all of our clients, new and old for their support in 2013, here is to a succesful 2014.
